When he ran for president in 1976, Democrat Jimmy Carter described himself as a born-again Christian. But White evangelicals haven’t always been so closely associated with the political right. It’s true, more than three-quarters of White evangelicals backed Republican President Donald Trump in November, close to the 80 percent who voted for him in 2016 and the 78 percent who supported Mitt Romney in 2012.
